What should I wear?

I have a job interview next week at a local accounting firm, and I am trying to decide what to wear to it. This is my first interview as I am still a college student, so I'm a little unsure about the fashion at firms. I own a tailored black suit, a tailored dark blue jacket, grey slacks, a white collared shirt, a blue collared shirt, a red/dark red diagonal striped tie, a blue tie, and a red pocket square.

It is a small, local firm (about 12 employees and three CPAs), but it is still an accounting firm. I was thinking about wearing the black suit with the white shirt and red tie. I also own a red pocket square and silver/black tie bar. The CPA who owns the firm wants me to interview with everyone in his office as he has already spoken with me in detail.

However, I heard and read that you should not wear a black suit to an interview. At the same time, I feel like the black suit is the most complete set, and that I look best in the black suit. The people at the firm are very friendly from what I hear, and the CPA who has expressed interest in hiring me is one of the nicest people ever. I don't know if the black suit is too serious or not, and the career services center at my college has given me mixed answers. My girlfriend has no idea.

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

If you feel you look your best in the black suit then that will add to your confidence. So I say wear that. Put your "first string" on the field. Also, a sales force manager at a very top IT firm told me he used to tell his new salespeople to have at least a couple hundred dollars in their wallets as another confidence builder. I'm also going to send you a private message so watch for that.

Kirby, thank you very much for the response and private message. Hopefully I can come back on here soon and let you know that I got it!

Styles vary in different parts of the country. I suggest staking out the business location to see what the other employees wear to work. Then, dress similarly for your interview.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.
