Timing on filing 1040X (amended Form 1040)

I've filed my original 1040 for 2010, and the personal check I enclosed to make my final payment has cleared my bank. So the IRS has received, though not necessarily accepted, my 1040.

Now, I need to amend my return (to account for an additional 1099 I received after I filed my 1040). I'm wondering whether I should try to preempt an IRS notice by filing the 1040-X as soon as possible, or whether I should wait for some period of time (and if so, how long) to avoid any confusion at the IRS. Does anyone here have any experience regarding this timing issue? Thanks in advance.
