Hello,

Does anyone familiar with USA tax law know whether it is better for an American living abroad to file tax returns in the USA as a US resident or a non-resident living abroad?

Are there any reasons someone may prefer to file as a US resident versus a non-resident?

A U.S. citizen or green card holder living abroad is required to file a US income tax return even though they are living and working outside the US. They cannot file as a non-resident. They do not have a choice (legally). Living and working outside the US for a US citizen has complex US tax filing issues that should be referred to a qualified CPA or tax professional.

I have specialized in foreign tax over the past few years and would be happy to consult or aid in filing the required tax returns and forms.
