my church is looking into buying a piece of property in Ohio that has several buildings and a large parking lot (an old shopping plaza.) The church will be using a half of a building on the property for religious services and other activities that pertinent to its mission (social outreach). there is one building on the property that is vacant and several others that are for profit businesses. My questions are can the church apply for the property to be tax exempt and can the church, a 501c3 organization (filed through the IRS), make a profit from these businesses from rent.
