Interest on default invoices

I live in a European Union country. I am a videographer.
I was subcontracted and hired to film a wedding by a person. I have not been paid for 12 months. I have sent him numerous statements. He paid only 10% of the bill but the rest is still unpaid. I am imposing a 5% simple interest on the bill. Is this interest automatically calculated by legislation? Some companies impose 12% interest in their invoices written at the bottom of an invoice.

You do not tell us which country so no one can tell you the law on this. Anyway, you might fare better if you required a substantial cash deposit from your customers in advance of the event you are engaged to video.
