Hello,
I would appreciate opinions and advice regarding the following matter.
I've received a letter from a department supposedly belonging to the GA dept of revenue demanding that I repay the refund that was sent from them for the year of 2010. They are also demanding that I pay hundreds of dollars in additional taxes which was supposedly not accounted for on their end as well as the interest on the total for those 4-5 years.
Are requests from the state such as this one actually valid and legitimate?
1)I've never owed the state taxes in all of my years filing taxes. I'm single and have no dependents, worked a regular job without any other financial ventures. So why are they saying that I owe taxes for that year? What has suddenly changed?
2)Even if for some reason that I actually did owe more taxes during that year, it was their mistake not to spot it, right? Can they actually request payment after FIVE years and then even the interest for those five years?
The whole things just seems like buffoonery, this letter falls far below my expectations of professionalism from the state government, just seems very odd. Would they even have the right to implement their demands?
