USA Filing joint when single

I have a new client who self prepared (using HRB software) and claimed to be married filing jointly for 2014, when he was divorced in Nov. 2014. I believe that he imported previous year's info and somehow transmitted this return before proofing. He also stated he was married for most of the year so assumed he was "married". To top that off, he had not reported some income on this return (resulting in a CP-2000), so I am now trying to determine if this "joint" return is even a valid first filing?

Any thoughts/comments appreciated. I have been unable to find any IRS cases on this matter.
