Series EE Savings Bonds issued January 1991 were gifted to me by my parents and reissued to me in my name over the course of 3 years: 2002, 2003, 2004. Tax was paid on the interest to date each of those years by my parents, in accordance with the law. I cashed them in at my bank upon maturity in January 2021. Got a 1099 last month from that bank with all 30 years of interest from January 1991 on it. It's a lot of money.
Other relevant facts: I have copies of all the bonds I cashed in and in addition to the original issue date, the month and year of reissuance is on each one. Copies of those old tax returns of my parents are long gone, as are they.
Needless to say, I don't want to pay tax that was already paid. What do I do?
Help! and Thanks!
