I have a client that has his self employed 401k with Stifel Nicolaus. They called him and told him that he needs to file a 1099-r and a 1096 for himself since he took a $15k distribution from the plan in 2013. I have never heard of a brokerage firm not providing a 1099. Is this common practice for self employed 401k's? This is my first client with a self employed 401k and I just want to make sure this is common practice before I charge him to do the 1099/1096.
TIA for any help.
